The Cost of Textbooks
An expense to consider when exploring college options
When comparing college choices, a common deciding factor often lies in total cost of attendance. In addition to tuition, other expenses should be taken into account. According to The College Board, the main categories of college expenses include tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, personal expenses, and transportation.
Often overlooked when thinking about college, the books category represents a significant investment in pursuing a college degree. The College Board estimates $1,298 as the yearly cost of books and supplies for the average full-time undergraduate student at a four-year public college. Over the course of four years, the average student could end up spending more than $5,000 on textbooks!
As part of EKU’s continued commitment to providing a pathway for students to achieve their goals regardless of income, we’ve launched EKU BookSmart - free textbooks for undergraduate students coming in Fall 2021. In addition to EKU’s already affordable tuition rate, EKU BookSmart lowers the overall cost of attendance. Estimated savings add up to $1,200 per year.
Because of this new initiative, no EKU student will have to drop a class because they can’t afford to buy the book. No EKU student will choose to not take a course because the books are more than they can afford. And no EKU student will have to weigh the cost of a textbook against meeting essential needs like food, housing or transportation.
Furthermore, EKU BookSmart reduces financial anxiety and leads to greater student success. Students will be able to complete more classes in less time and finish their degrees faster. On the first day of classes, faculty will walk into the classroom knowing every student has the materials they need to learn and grow throughout the semester.
All undergraduate students, on campus or online, are automatically enrolled in EKU BookSmart once registered for Fall 2021 classes. Books will be gathered, packaged and delivered in a Big E Box before classes start. Not only is EKU BookSmart free, but it simplifies and streamlines the textbook process. As part of the EKU Advantage, free textbooks, new scholarships and no application fee make EKU even more affordable.
While exploring your college options, be sure to consider the total cost of attendance. And if you’re looking for a university committed to keeping higher education affordable, Eastern Kentucky University may just be the perfect choice for you.
